Taprobane Island is located 200 yards off the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the centre of Weligama bay, which in turn is 3 1/2 hours south of the capital of Colombo and 30 minutes south of the provincial capital of Galle, a town designated by the United Nations as a world heritage site.
Taprobane was built in the 1920s by Count de Mauny-Talyande in a neo Palladian style and played host to numerous royal guests, writers and politicians over the years. It is set just 100m from the shores of Weligama Bay and is only accessible to guests by wading through the knee-deep water or on an elephant or sedan chair!
Guests have a staff of six who will cook and tend to their every need, so there is no need to leave the island unless curiosity tells them otherwise. Taprobane offers the ultimate in luxury and privacy and is the perfect place to unwind and relax.
There are some beautiful living spaces with stunning views overlooking the Indian ocean and the tropical gardens are a scene of total peace and tranquility. The infinity edge pool provides the perfect place to cool off. Nearby beaches provide a wealth of watersports and white water rafting, trekking and mountain biking can be arranged through local companies. There are plenty of cultural activities too. Visit the nearby Kataluwa Temple to see ancient murals or the enormous Buddha statue at the Wewurukannala Temple, near Dikwella. You can also take a trip to the nearby lowland tea country and visit Koggala Lake and the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum of Folk Art & Culture, one of Sri Lanka's most acclaimed museums.
Taprobane Island offers five en-suite bedrooms. Each bedroom is filled with colonial style furniture and features four poster beds draped with a mosquito net, overhead fans and spacious ensuite bathrooms.
All double rooms open onto their own private terraces with panoramic views out to the Indian Ocean.
The Island comprises 2 ½ acres of sheer tropical fantasy with nothing between it and the South Pole. Accommodation is provided for in 5 en-suite bedrooms, with spacious living areas, balconies, verandahs, tropical gardens and a stunning infinity pool. A staff of 5 caters for your every need; in fact after arrival, guests frequently never leave the Island until their departure.
